Have you heard? The Georgia State Patrol is about to start a month-long "speeding ticket frenzy," issuing tickets left and right, hoping to raise $9 million for the state. Gwinnett County speeding ticket attorneys have heard the rumor. But there's one thing you ought to know about the plan: it doesn't exist.
The rumor is just an urban myth that has been circulating by e-mail since 2006. The message is the same, but the states and names of highways warned about change in each version.
The "warning" making the rounds this time cites an article in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on July 19 as its source. But there was no such article.
Through spokesman Gordy Wright, the Georgia State Patrol stated there is no plan for a "30-day speeding frenzy."
Checking with Snopes.com, a website that follows internet hoaxes...
the same "warning" can be found for dozens of cities or states in the past.
The alleged Georgia crackdown is the only e-mail hoax still current. The alleged kick-off date is August 1.
The warning is being distributed by e-mail, but also appears on message boards for Lexus, BMW, Pontiac G8 and Harley Davidson.
Even though the hoax e-mail says the purpose of the crackdown is to raise $9 million, it also says that $1 million will cover overtime for troopers and the rest will cover "dwindling budgets."
Under Georgia law, speeding fine revenue goes to the counties where the ticket was issued and not to the state.
