According to recent news reports, a Georgia woman was found guilty of charges related to a crash that killed five people last Easter Sunday. Following several days of jury deliberation, the 24-year-old woman was found guilty "on all five counts of vehicular homicide, serious injury by vehicle, hit and run, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane and tampering with evidence."
Reports detail that the young woman caused a chain reaction car accident on Easter Sunday 2009 when the BMW she was driving sideswiped a Mercedes. She was arrested by local police 11 days following the crash. As a result of the fiery wreck, five people died, including three children.
During police interviews following her arrest, the woman denied any involvement in the crash. But, after police told the woman they had evidence to prove that her car was involved, the woman began to become emotional and complied with police. The woman expressed, "All I remember was turning the car back because I saw a car coming into my lane, you know, where you get too close, you realize you want to turn back. The car just started spinning, spinning, and it wouldn't stop. It just stopped, and I didn't really realize what happened, and I looked in my window, in my rear view and all I saw was flames."
The woman also later admitted to police that she had her BMW repaired following the deadly crash to cover up her involvement. "She told investigators that she thought about turning herself in several times, but she said her mom stopped her." She explained that her mother tried to stop her because she didn't want to lose her.
The woman is scheduled to be sentenced on Thursday.
