Derek Lowe, professional baseball pitcher for the Atlanta Braves, throws fast.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, he also drives fast.
On top of that, he drives drunk.
Fast and inebriated most definitely did not lead to a happy conclusion for Lowe last Thursday evening, when he was charged with DUI around 10 p.m. in Buckhead. A patrol officer stated that Lowe smelled of alcohol and was administered a field sobriety test, which he failed.
Lowe was also alleged to have been speeding, with the officer stating that the pitcher was racing another vehicle on Peachtree Road.
Lowe refused to take a breathalyzer test. Under Georgia's implied consent law, every driver licensed in the state agrees as a condition of licensing to submit to this test to determine blood alcohol level if a police officer believes he or she has been drinking and driving. Lowe's refusal to do so is admissible as evidence against him if his case proceeds to trial, and he could lose his license for an extended period of time.
Following his arrest, Lowe was booked at the Atlanta City Jail. He was released after he posted bond.
Lowe apologized to his family, teammates, fans and management on Friday, saying he was sorry "for the attention arising from this matter."
