In every life, there are highs and lows.

A high point for 26-year-old Rima Fakih was undoubtedly winning last year's Miss USA pageant.

At the other end of the spectrum, Fakih might likely prefer to just forget last Saturday ever happened.

Shortly after 2 a.m. that morning, Fakih was stopped by a Detroit-area police officer and ultimately charged with misdemeanor drunk driving.

Fakih and a companion had been drinking earlier Friday evening, and Fakih determined that she should take the wheel as designated driver, deeming that her companion was too intoxicated to drive.

Fakih then apparently pulled over to the curb shortly after starting the car, realizing that she was also intoxicated. A Highland Park police officer spotted her vehicle at that point.

The most recent media reports of the incident do not indicate what Fakih's blood-alcohol content was when she was stopped.

Fakih was stated to be "very saddened and very apologetic" over the incident. A spokesperson for her said that "her main objective here is to make sure that she gains the trust and respect not only from her family and friends but from everybody else who looks up to her."

Fakih was the first Michigan winner of the Miss USA crown since 1993, as well as being the first woman of Arab-American descent to ever win the title.

If she is convicted of the charge against her, she could face three months in jail and be ordered to pay fines and court costs.

Community service requirements could also be imposed upon her.
