Gwinnett County and Cities Still at Odds over Radar/Laser Use

Municipalities throughout Gwinnett County continue to feel the effects of a dispute between the Gwinnett Municipal Association and the county that was unable to be resolved at the end of last year.

Specifically, the county and multiple jurisdictions within it could not decide how to share tax revenues and apportion services between them, with the result that many towns and cities lost their ability from January of this year to use radar or laser to detect speeding drivers. We first reported on this development in a March 8 blog post.

Brief Amnesty Period for Outstanding DUI Fines, Speeding Tickets

Gwinnett County is offering an unprecedented opportunity for those with outstanding citations for traffic violations, including speeding tickets and DUI offenses. Those who fail to pay their tickets, or appear in court to defend against them, have a bench warrant issued for their arrest. However, for the first time ever, Gwinnett County is offering amnesty for those with outstanding tickets.

This amnesty program still requires prior offenders to pay the fines associated with their traffic citations, but it waives the $25 bench warrant fee that the County routinely imposes upon those who fail to show up or pay by their scheduled court date. But don't think the amnesty program is in place because of officials' kind hearts and desire to forgive; the goal of the program is to raise revenue.

Georgia Drivers Second-Most Likely to Get Speeding Tickets

Gwinnett County speeding tickets attorneys have always known that speeding tickets are common in Georgia, but a recent study indicates that Georgia drivers are some of the most likely in the country to receive a traffic ticket.

The state where drivers are most likely to receive tickets is Florida, followed closely by Georgia.

The study was done by the National Motorists Association, which is a motorists' rights group that wants to help drivers fight tickets.

Here are the rankings they compiled:

1. Florida
2. (tie) Georgia
2. (tie) Nevada

Electronic Speeding Tickets in Georgia, Also No Texting & Driving

Gwinnett County speeding ticket attorneys are letting people know that the Georgia State Patrol is moving away from the practice of issuing paper traffic tickets. An electronic ticket issued from the officer's patrol car is the way of the future.

In the near future, Georgia State Patrol officers will be able to check drivers' records, issue electronic citations and file their incident reports directly from their own patrol vehicles.

For one thing, the tickets will be sent directly to the computer system of the clerk of court. The officers will not have to deliver paper tickets, and the clerks will not have to enter the information into their system by hand. Previously, troopers printed paper tickets in their vehicles, but had to deliver tickets to the courts, which took time.

Drivers Must Pay DeKalb County Traffic Tickets or Could Lose License

Drivers with unpaid DeKalb County traffic tickets must pay them at the DeKalb Recorders Court before the month of May is over. Starting last Monday, the county announced that people had 28 days to pay their fines or the county would move to suspend their license. The move is part of a crackdown on outstanding traffic citations by the county. Also starting Monday, the court will start instituting new fees, issuing warrants for unpaid tickets and sending information to the Georgia Department of Driver Services.

In January, Judge Nelly Withers became the chief judge of the DeKalb Recorders Court and has since been trying to turn the court around after years of mismanagement and corruption. The court handles more traffic tickets than any other court in Georgia, and the last item on her agenda is the backlog of 500,000 unpaid traffic tickets.
